Hemyock Castle
Ancient Heart of the Blackdowns

Historical Nuggets:

Some nuggets found during research:

Civil War "Amusement"

The Parliamentary military commander Sir Thomas Fairfax was ordered not to "amuse himself" by attacking fortified houses. Presumably the medieval Hemyock Castle would have been considered a "fortified house," and so been ignored unless it became a threat.

From the Calendar of State Papers, Domestic Series, 1645, June 5.
Proceedings at the Committee of both kingdoms:

Item 14: To acknowledge the receipt of Sir Thos. Fairfax's letter, and add this clause, that he amuse not himself in taking [fortified] houses, but hasten to effect a conjunction with Vermuyden's and Cromwell's forces.

King Charles's Lost Spaniel

Both Kings Charles I and Charles II were so fond of their small spaniel dogs that breeds are still named after them: The King Charles and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Periodically, their dogs were stolen, and sometimes held to ransom to pressurize the Kings.

From the Calendar of State Papers, Domestic Series, 1667, April 21.

Item 163: Advertisement of a reward for a white spaniel dog belonging to the King, stolen out of the Earl of Suffolk's stables in the Blue Mews, on April 20.
